Developments and Issues in Egyptian Education under the Impact of Modernization

本研究的主旨在討論近兩個世紀以來，埃及教育歷史發展的脈絡，進而解析西方世界世俗教育的理念對埃及教育在現代化的發展過程中所造成的衝突和影響，以及這些衝突和影響對埃及未來的政策制定和發展方向所造成的連鎖制約效應。本研究基本的討論架構有三個主軸：一、申論伊斯蘭教育的內涵與埃及教育發展的歷史脈絡；二、探討埃及教育在現代化過程中面臨的問題和衝擊；三、以3所埃及最重要的大學的發展情況和高等教育的政策方向來顯示其高等教育所面臨的挑戰，以及宗教價值與世俗理念在現代教育領域中的角力與消長。

The aim of this paper is to examine the development of modern Egyptian education over the past two centuries, and further analyze the impact of Western educational concept on the forging and evolution of Egyptian education policy. As the Egyptian education moved toward the Western concept and philosophy, the disagreement between Islam-believers and the Western-oriented policy-makers became inevitable. There are three major sections of this paper: 1. the discussion of the core value and essence of Islamic education and its development; 2. the scrutiny of issues and conflicts encountered by educators during the process of the modernization; 3. the exploration of the developmental trajectory of three of the most important universities in Egypt, and further analysis of higher education policies and ongoing power struggle between religion and secularism in the arena of modern education.
