What Keeps Rural School Teachers Teaching in Adverse Circumstances: A Study of the Characteristics of Resilience of Primary School Teachers

It has been consistently reported that teaching is a physically and emotionally demanding job with low reward. To keep teaching in rural areas requires resilience. Drawing upon the in-depth semistructured interviews with a sample of eight rural school teachers in Hunan province， the study analyzed the data by three-level coding and found that there were ten critical characteristics of resilience of rural primary school teachers: commitment to teaching， caring and responsibility for students， viewing tough things in a positive manner， endurance， satisfaction， sense of achievement， active professional development， positive problem solving， active emotional adjustment， and being good at communication and building rapport. These characteristics could explain why those teachers came to teach， kept teaching and taught well in rural primary schools.
