Hutchins’Education for Understanding and the Construction of a Learning Society

In The Learning Society，Ｒobert M． Hutchins proposed an ideal republic — the republic of learning． It is a common educational life in process． In this process，understanding plays an important role． Understanding，in Hutchins’s opinion，is not only what education aims to achieve，but the foundation for promoting the dialog between individuals． Eventually education for understanding will lead to a world community． This paper examines the aim，content，and approach of Hutchins’s education for understanding，and how understanding can promote the construction of a learning society．
