Student discipline in American colleges and universities in the early period were inflexible and dogmatic. Since the mid 20th century， student discipline gradually became democratic and rational chararaterised by lessened punishment and control. There are four strands of influential theories in the evolution of student discipline. The formulation and content of university regulations guarantee the legitimacy and educational functions of university discipline.
