There is No Substitute for the Personal Moral Qualities of a Good Teacher

David Carr教授1944年出生於英格蘭中北部約克郡的工人家庭，但當時家境不富裕，因此Carr教授中學畢業後先進入社會工作，再進入師範學院進修，畢業後到中小學任教。Carr教授在中小學任教多年後，體認到哲學思考的重要性，可藉此釐清教育實踐中，許多根本的問題，因此他申請進入倫敦大學教育學院；在取得碩士學位後，到Murray House師範學院任教（此學院後來併入愛丁堡大學）（黃藿、但昭偉譯，2007：xii-xiii）。

David Carr's retirement from his post as Professor of Philosophy of Education at the University of Edinburgh in the autumn of 2009 heralded the end of an era in which Carr had been one of the world's most active and influential educational thinkers. As emeritus professor Carr continues to think and to write, and this journal was privileged to be given the chance to interview him about his views and research interests.
