Due to the interaction of various fragmental forces， the Humboldtian principle of the unity of teaching and research ins challenged at modern universities. But in and out of the higher educational system there exist great forces that integrate research， teaching and the advanced study which fight against the various fragmental forces. In the time of knowledge economy， universities， especially research universities， are still the places for inquiry and they play an increasingly important role in the processes of scholastic progress and social development.
