The Opportunities and Challenges of Data-Intensive Research in Education: A Multidisciplinary Perspective

The rise of data science has brought new opportunities and challenges to educational research. In the United States， the Computing Research Association (CRA) held a two-workshop sequence on data-intensive research for the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the field. The ideas and insights from these workshops were summarized in a report ＂Data-Intensive Research in Education: Current Work and Next Steps＂， which was released in October 2015. Focusing on the first workshop， this paper summarizes insights from relatively mature data -intensive research initiatives in the sciences and engineering， and discusses the opportunities and challenges that could aid in advancing nascent data-intensive research in education.
