The World-Class University Project and Faculty's Scientific Productivity

While the world -class university project has played an important role in developing research universities in China， it is confronted with the challenge of improving the efficiency of the investment. Taking use of data from the Changing Academic Profession in Asia， this study attempts to apply instrument variable regression to analyze the effects of the world-class university project on scientific productivity for university faculty members. The results suggest that the world-class university project promotes international publications and patenting， but has no significant effect on domestic publications. Compared with the less-selective universities， the effectiveness of non -government research funding on academic publications is higher in selective universities， which are financed by the world-class university project; however， there is no significant difference in the effectiveness of government research funding between the two types of universities. Based on these results， several suggestions are given to reform the input mechanisms of the world-class university project.
