The Income Effects of Overeducation

Overeducation is related with the allocation of human resources in the labor market， causing the underuse of human capital and the waste of scarce educational resources. By using the household survey of CGSS2010， the paper discusses whether overeducation can lead to the income loss， and probes the sources of income disparity. It is found that compared with the matched with the same education level， the overeducated does not suffer any income loss， while the undereducated enjoys income premiums. This disparity mainly results from the occupation segmentation. Besides， the sector segmentation also contributes to the income premiums of the undereducated. However， without the effects of labor market segmentation on income， the overeducated earns the most and the undereducated earns the least. Finally， hypothesis on the complementarity of human capital cannot give a perfect explanation to overeducation， but the labor market segmentation is the main cause of overeducation.
