Jiang Nanxiang was an outstanding educator good at flexibly applying basic principles of Marxism to practice. When President of Tsinghua University，he maintained that teaching was the fundamental function and central task of higher education，attached great importance to the integration of the different roles served by education (i. e.，the social function in serving the country and the primary function in nurturing all-round individuals)，and adhered to a pragmatic leadership style.
