Two hundred years ago, Berlin University was founded. It thereafter became the model of modern universities and spread out across the whole world. Berlin University is one of the remarkable achievements of Western civilization especially during the Enlightenment period. The significance of Berlin University's founding goes far beyond itself and represents the success of philosophy of reason. Humboldt's idea of university reflects his understanding of the Enlightenment Movement. The success of Berlin University has been largely credited to institutional factors of German society such as freedom and competition.
