综合高中是美国的独创，被视为最具美国特点的学校。综合高中的核心追求是公平与民主，它是美国社会促进教育机会均等理想的重要体现和工具。但经过多年的发展，综合高中的公平和民主理想并未得以真正实现，从教育起点、过程和结果的公平这三个维度来审视综合高中，有助于我们更为深入地认识综合高中理想与现实之间的张力。

The comprehensive high school is an original invention of America， and is regarded as the school with American characteristics. The core of comprehensive high school is pursuing equity and democracy， and it helps to promote equal educational opportunity. But after so many years， the comprehensive high school does not really realize the ideal of educational equity. Analyzing the starting point、the process and the outcome of education could help us to understand the conflict between ideal and reality of American comprehensive high school.
