On establishing English public speaking as a course for non-English majors

本文介绍笔者在近年来向非英语专业本科生教授[英语公众演说课]的过程中所总结的教学目标、教学内容、授课形式、学业评估方式，提出了可操作的建议和方案。[英语公众演说课]是一门实践型而非理论传授型的课程，因此需要教师合理安排授课内容，充分调动学生的积极性，并建立一个基于演讲实践能力的而非演讲理论能力的评估体系。只有在轻松而高效的学习机制里，才有可能切实提高学生的英语公众演说能力。

The author proposes her operable schemes of teaching objectives， tasks， methods， as well as a novel principle of assessing students' achievement for an English public speaking course， based on her teaching experience with non-English majors in recent years. English public speaking is a course based on practical rather than theoretical learning. Therefore， instructors are supposed to organize the lectures appropriately so as to mobilize students' initiatives and incentives. Furthermore， a sensible assessment system of students' achievements is required to represent students' practical rather than theoretical abilities. Only by creating an enjoyable and efficient learning mechanism can it help expand students' public speaking aptitude.
