尽管远程教育在19世纪中叶就已经存在，但对远程教育的理论分析与系统研究直到上世纪50和60年代才在西方国家开始出现，到80年代开始成熟和繁荣。该文综述了国际远程教育界自80年代初至今发表的主要理论研究成果及其代表人物。

Though distance education was initiated in the mid of 19th century， but its theoretical analysis and systematic research started from the 50s and 60s decades of the last century， and began to be mature since the 1980s. The paper makes some comments on the research and published outcomes of international distance education since the 1980s.
