A Review of the Idea of the University of John Henry Newman

纽曼是英国著名的高等教育思想家。他认为，大学是探索普遍学问的机构，是传授普遍知识的场所，大学的唯一职能就是教学，就是为社会培养良好成员。为此，大学要为学生提供理想的学习环境，向学生传授普遍的完整的知识，同时帮助学生发展智力，探求真理，掌握真理。

John Henry Newman was a well─known English educator on higher education. In his opinion， a university is a seat of universal learning and a place of teaching universal knowledge. Instruction is the only function of the university， with its aim of training good members of society. The university should provide the students with an ideal learning environment teach them universal and whole knowledge， educate the intellect to reason well in all matters， to reach out towards truth， and to grasp it.
