A Study on the Incorporation of the Concept of Quadrilaterals into Lexical Learning Trajectories

This study aims to investigate the performance of elementary school students in geometric concepts and language during quadrilateral activities. A total of 26 fourth-year elementary school students participated in this study. The researchers referred to the content of the current textbooks and incorporated geometry concepts related to quadrilaterals into lexical learning trajectories. Learning activities, including parallel and perpendicular activities, quadrilateral concept activities, and, quadrilateral drawing activities were arranged, and data were analyzed to understand the development and difficulties of their mathematical language performance, serving as a basis for future teaching improvements. The results of the research were as follows: 1. Students could use mathematical languages such as distance and perpendicularity to express concepts in parallel and perpendicular activities. 2. Students could express the concept of a quadrilateral from the characteristics of the sides and angles in the quadrilateral concept activity. 3. Students were able to use drawing tools in quadrilateral drawing activities, attending to characteristics of sides and angles. Implications were given for future quadrilateral teaching or research.
