The annual U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program award was launched in was launched on April 26, 2011. The program was developed with input from a variety of federal, state and local government agencies and a variety of other stakeholders. Green Ribbon Schools recognized schools that were exemplary in energy efficiency, environmental education, health education and green architecture. The US Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program had three pillars: reduce environmental impact and costs; improve the health and wellness of students and staff; provide effective environmental and sustainability education. The program was as a comprehensive federal program addressing school improvement and school effectiveness.
