Status Quo of High School Students’ Selection of the Subjects for College Entrance Examination and Factors Analysis： Taking the First Batch of Selected Students in 5 High Schools in Zhejiang Province as an Example
The core of the new college entrance examination reform is to give students the right to choose. The analysis of the phenomena and causes in high school students' use of their rights to choose will contribute to the correct adjustment of policies and the smooth progress of reform. The study using a questionnaire surveyed the iirst 1 598 students who chose subjects in the exam in Zhejiang Province. The findings show that some students tended to choose art or science subjects； some subjects were the popular choice of those top students; there was Matthew effect between the learning level and the satisfaction of the newcollege entrance examination; and some students tended to avoid the conflict and showed dificulty in seeking assistance in the selection process. The influential factors of these phenomena vary. Factors contributing to the art or science preference includes the basic configuration of physical and chemical，and political and history，the male preference for science and female preference for art，and male not selecting politics and female not selecting physics. The factors for top students' preference were that upper-level students preferred to choose physics and chemistry，moderate-level tended to choose politics， and lower-level preferred biology and geography. As for the Matthew effect，the higher the level of achievement，the higher the degree of understanding and satisfaction and the clearer the goal of selection. With regard to a- voiding conflict，there was a dilemma between subject interest and academic achievement； there was little difference in scores among different subjects； and t^he conflict between employment prospects and personal interest. The selecting autonomy were inlluenced by the factors that parents and teachers had lower ability to help. Various phenomena in the selection of subjects had caused problems such as the inertia of llberal arts and sciences，the different difficulty levels of subjects，the lack of understanding of off-campus information ，and the lack of resource allocation. According to this， high-school schools should be allowed to adopt a gradual reform strategy of ^package combination”，attaching importance to the specialized study of the college entrance examination and increasing the construction of supporting resources for high school students.
