An Empirical Study of the Relationship between Education and Income： A Perspective from the Influence of Higher Education Expansion in China

Based on the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) in 2010，this study investigated the influence of the higher education expansion policy in 1999 on the educational attainment and income of university graduates of different years，and estimated the private rate of return to education in China using Instru- mental variable-Regression discontinuity design. The findings are as follows： tirst，the impact of the higher education expansion policy on people's educational attainment was not limited to the Held of higher education， but throughout the various stages of the education system in China; second，the IV estimate of the private rate of return to education was 12. 3 %，and 10. 3 % and 14. 4% respectively for the male and the female sample，which was twice about the estimates using OLS method .
