英文摘要 | Teaching is highly regarded in U.S. liberal arts colleges which are well known for outstanding undergraduate education. The reasons are as follows: with the idea of liberal arts education, the right people are hired, sufficient support is provided for the faculty, the appropriate faculty assessment system is implemented, and the active and supportive sense of community is created among the faculty. Among them, the faculty assessment system plays an important role in making the faculty devote their time and efforts to teaching and keep a good balance among research, teaching and service. It is found that there is an obvious emphasis on teaching in the faculty review criteria, the role as a teacher is most highly regarded, the teaching-related people are responsible for the assessment, most of the materials for review are relative with teaching, and the review period is long enough. Serving the mission, orientation and development of liberal arts colleges, the faculty assessment system is coherent with the faculty hiring policy, and is backed up by a series of support and training for faculty from the college. |
