Publish or Perish: Pressure Faced by Young Scholars under‘Tenure-track’Contracts to Publish in International Journals

To boost research output， universities are raising requirement on research-active staff to publish in international journals. Nevertheless， the emerging publish -or -perish culture has rarely been empirically investigated. This article reported a semi -structured interview study on a group of young researchers under ‘tenure-track’contracts at a research-centered university in western China. The study showed that these young scholars were faced with great pressure to publish. The pressure to publish or perish had pushed down research quality. It also detracted from the efforts the participants could have devoted to teaching. Furthermore， the huge pressure， as reported by the participants， negatively affected their health and family relations.
