The Expansion and Inequality in Access to Higher Education in China

By making use of a nationally representative dataset collected by China Family Panel Studies in 2010， this study applied the multilevel cross-classified model to examine the effects of expansion policy on equal access to higher education after controlling for inequality in chances of enrollment caused by the fixed admission quota for each province. The results indicate that the expansion interrupted the continued growth of regional inequality; the gender disparity and intergenerational transmission of human capital were weakened ； the expansion policy did not increase rural and ethnic inequalities； the unbalanced expansion across provinces indirectly contributed to the expansion of rural inequality nationwide； and narrowed the rural inequality within regions.
