The Scientific Research Competitiveness of Chinese Universities: A Comparative Analysis Based on InCites Database

From the perspectives of number of published papers， citation rate， social influence and decisionmaking influence， this paper analyzes the trends in scientific research competitiveness of Chinese universities between 1981 and 2013. It is found that over the past 30 years， the number of published papers has undergone exponential growth in China with significantly improved citation rate， social influence approaching the world average level and steadily improved decision-making influence. While the gap between China and the United States is still visible in terms of the quantity， citation rate and impact of published papers， China ranks ahead of other BRICS countries in scientific productivity. Guided by the overall strategy of promoting the development of world-class universities and first-class disciplines， it is imperative for Chinese universities to lay emphasis on the research on prospective and fundamental issues， to improve the ability of original innovation， to create a number of university think tanks with Chinese characteristics， and to enhance the capabilities of serving the nation.
