The article first talks on the history of the development of deanship in American universities. The author analyses the institutional and cultural environment in which dean works. The dean's role resides in academic value but he/she mainly does administrative work. He/she must be an excellent scholax but has to use most of his/her time to manage his/her institutions. The author continues to analyze the roles and responsibilities of the dean and the skills and core knowledge he/she must possess. Finally the author points out that the dean could not fulfill the expectations of the university authority and professors， if they do not support and understand the dean's special role in the university development.
