Using English Language Songs in the Foreign Language Classroom

This paper attempts to advance the idea that English language songs are an important addition to the foreign language classroom. While it is not a novel idea to use English language songs in the ESL/EFL classroom, and many foreign language educators have included songs in a language lesson, an explanation is offered as to the possible reason why many language teachers do not include songs as a part of their classroom curriculum on a consistent basis. Attention is also given to the benefits language learners can and have derived when using songs as a language learning tool. Additionally, this paper reveals how songs offer busy language teachers the opportunity to spend a minimum amount of time and use a limited amount of materials while still giving students the chance to have an interesting and valuable language learning experience. Finally, this paper examines the potential downsides associated with using songs in the classroom and offers some practical solutions for the language teacher in order to ensure that any potential problems may be avoided.外語教師常運用歌曲減低課堂緊張氛圍、增進學生學習意願，但多屬點綴性質，顯少作為主要教材。本文綜合相關文獻，主張外語教師應善用音樂資源，以輔助學生之語言學習。本文分別探討以下議題：1、音樂少為語言教學重心的原因，2、利用歌曲教學的各項優點，3、相關教學活動設計範例，以及4、教師們運用音樂於語言教學時可能遭遇之困難與解決方式。
