理性主義、反理性主義、后現代主義等哲學思潮的出現為發展性學生工作理念的提出奠定了理論基礎，同時也為體現以主體性、全面性和創新性為特征的發展性學生工作提供了理論依據。主體性是學生全面性和創新性發展的基礎，全面性是學生主體性和創新性發展的表現，創新性是學生主體性和全面性發展的深化，三者有機統一，缺一不可。
