Why did They Leave：A Study on English Learners’Dopping Out in TV University
高辍学率是远程教育当前面临的一个严峻问题。为了挖掘辍学背后的深层次原因,找到降低辍学率的有效措施,本研究对上海电视大学2010 年春季入学的英语专业本科生进行了长达三学期的追踪调查。本文是第三学期追踪调查的研究成果,分析和归纳了该学期3 名学生辍学的原因。研究数据通过问卷调查和访谈获得,并依据“远程教育辍学归因框架冶对其进行了分析。研究发现,英语基础差、缺乏行之有效的学习方法是导致学生辍学的最根本原因;学校教学支持服务不到位、学生自身专业选择的盲目性等是导致学生辍学的重要原因;由此,使学生产生了对英语学习的畏惧心理,这是导致学生辍学的深层次原因。
High dropout rate is a serious problem in China's distance education. To probe into the deep causes for the dropout phenomena and find out effective measures to reduce the dropout rate, this study has traced the students in English major in Shanghai TV University who enrolled in the spring semester in 2010 for three continuous semesters, and it is the research result of the third semester which analyzed the specific reasons why three students quit their learning programs in this semester. Research data were collected through questionnaires and interviews and analyzed based on the Composite Attribution Model of Distant Learners ' Dropout. This study found that the basic factors causing students' dropping out were their poor English basis and lack of effective learning methods, and their blindness when choosing learning programs and the inefficient support from the education provider were also important reasons responsible for their dropping out. This article finally emphasized that students' own fear of English leaning caused by the above factors was the underlying reason leading to students' dropping out.
