Study of Menstrual Knowledge, Attitudes, and Distress among Female Elementary Students and Their Mothers in the Hualien Region

本研究之目的在探討花蓮地區國小高年級女生及其母親之月經知識、月經態度及經期不適之相關性。採分層與群集隨機抽樣法,共抽取12所學校,有效樣本共394位母親或女兒。研究工具包括個人基本資料、月經知識量表、月經態度量表及經期不適量表。施測所得資料以描述性統計、配對t檢定及皮爾森積差相關進行分析。
研究結果顯示:一、近三分之一女學生初經已來,九成以上女生希望自己的月經知識來自母親;29.4%母親對孩子現在來經覺得太早了,89.8%母親在孩子初經來時會告知月經處理的訊息。二、女兒與母親之月經知識答對率為 47.99%與70.60%,女兒的月經知識答對率顯著低於母親;女兒與母親之月經態度得分為1.89±0.38與2.17±0.42,兩者之月經態度均偏負向;女兒與母親之經期不適得分為0.94±0.77與1.22±0.80,母親之經期不適得分顯著高於女兒。三、母親與女兒之月經知識、月經態度及經期不適呈顯著正相關;女兒之月經態度與母親之經期不適呈顯著負相關。此結果可提供學校與性教育工作者進行國小性教育或親職性教育之參考。
英文摘要
The purpose of this study was to investigate menstrual knowledge, attitudes toward menstruation and menstrual distress among female elementary students and their mothers in the Hualien region. A stratified cluster random sampling method was adopted. A sample of 394 female elementary students and their mothers from 12 elementary schools in Taiwan's Hualien County participated in this study. The questionnaires consisted of four sections: 1. personal information; 2. menstrual knowledge; 3. menstrual attitude and 4. menstrual distress. Data was analyzed using paired t-test and Pearson's correlation.
Study results showed that 33.0% of female elementary students had reached menarche. Most female students (93.4%) preferred receiving menstrual information from their mothers. Some mothers (29.4%) felt their daughters periods had started early. Most mothers (89.8%) first discussed menstrual management at menarche. The total correct response rates for the menstrual knowledge assessment for daughters and mothers were 47.99% and 70.60%, respectively. The mean scores on the menstrual attitude questionnaire for daughters and mothers were 1.89 ± 0.38 and 2.17 ± 0.42, respectively. Both mothers and daughters scored low on the menstrual attitude parameters. The mean scores on the menstrual distress questionnaire for daughters and mothers were 0.94 ± 0.77 and 1.22 ± 0.80, respectively. Mothers scored higher on menstrual distress than daughters. Mother and daughters exhibited a significant positive correlation of menstrual knowledge, menstrual attitudes, and menstrual distress. Daughters' menstrual attitudes and mothers' menstrual distress were negatively correlated.
Based on study results it is recommended that elementary schools and sexual-health care providers should offer greater assistance to female elementary students and their mothers to improve their menstrual knowledge, establish positive menstrual attitudes, and deal with menstrual distress.
