An Empirical Research on the Mission Statements of World-famous Universities

大学使命宣言是大学办学理念及核心价值观的浓缩与提炼。本文从大学自身的发展历史和与社会环境互动以及二者交互影响的角度，采用基于文本的实证研究方法，通过构建由“ 古典”、“ 现代”和“ 21 世纪”3 个维度组成的分析模型，对13 所世界一流大学的使命宣言进行实证分析，并据此归纳出3 种类型的大学使命宣言，希望由此揭示不同大学的发展目标、战略及核心价值观，为我国大学使命宣言的设计、分析提供模型工具，为对国际上不同语言文化背景的大学进行办学理念与思路的比较提供一种参照系。

University Mission Statement is conciseness and extraction of the ideas of operating university and its core values. This paper takes the perspective of the development history of university and its interaction with social environment, to analyze the contents and special features of thirteen well-known Universities'Mission Statement in different countries and different regions. The author constructs a model of textual analysis with three different dimensions such as "classics," "modern," and " the 21st Century." In this model, it hopes to reveal different universities on their development goals, strategies and core values. Moreover， it can be a tool for the design and analysis of the Chinese University Mission Statement, and provides the valuable reference by comparing the ideas of operating universities in different universities' background in the world.
