法国是最早创建师范学校的国家之一。社会的发展与变革对教师的要求不断变化，法国教师的地位也随之变迁。小学教师曾经作为乡村文化人受人尊敬，中学教师因承担培养精英的责任而享有较高的社会地位。教育民主化和中小学的发展对教师地位有所影响，但教育质量又要求教师应具备较高的素质。教师培养与录用的硕士化，成为当前法国教师教育改革的主题。
