Research evaluation has become a major part of the United Kingdom higher education scene since the implementation of the first research assessment exercise in 1986. This article considers the development of research evaluation practices in the United Kingdom over this period， before examining the conclusions of a range of studies that have reviewed its operation and impacts， at both the system and subject levels. Some consideration is then given to research evaluation practices in other countries， before some concluding observations are offered on the possible directions in which research evaluation practice may be going.
