Of all Tsinghua College presidents, Y. S. Tsao held the presidency for the longest time. He emphasized that the major educational objective is to develop a noble personality and maintained that traditional Chinese culture should be combined with western culture. Under his leadership, Tsinghua College was transformed into a university and the Academy of Chinese Learning was established. He energetically recruited first-class scholars and developed the model of administration by professors. Overall, he exerted a profound influence on the development of Tsinghua University.
