Applying the Modern Spirit to Chinese Education： Gu Ming-yuan's Thoughts on Modern Education and Educational Modernization

The soul of Gu Ming-yuan?s educational thoughts and educational practice is the unremi--ting pursutt of the ^modern spirit”，which refers to the attempt to promote the Chinese educational modernization .He contends that social modernization has undergone three major stages： agricultural society， industrial society， and information society . Education shows diverse characteristics in different social forms. Educational modernity is the concentrated reflection of some characteristics of modern education and the essential attribute that modern education differs from traditional education. Professor Gu has dis- cussed these characteristics from eight aspects. In order to advance the Chinese educational modernization， tt is imperative to abandon some old-fashioned ideas and practices that exist in traditional education.
