The recent economic recession has posed serious challenges to American higher education. This paper introduces the impact of the recession on higher education finance in the United States， describes the responses of federal and state governments and higher education institutions to the crisis， and sketches the negative impact of the crisis on student access and success. Implications for higher education administration and strategic planning are discussed.
