Evaluation Model of Distance Student Engagement: Based on LMS Data

This study explored the relationship between LMS behavior variables and distance student engagement by using survey method and data mining. Twenty-six online behavior variables were identified from four dimensions of online participation， active interaction， self-regulation and performance effort. The study employed Distance Student Engagement Scale that has been tested with good psychometric properties to measure distance students ' course engagement. Based on the data from 150 students of Open University of China， the study took course as a control variable and constructed the evaluation models of distance student total engagement and three kinds of sub-engagement (cognitive， affective， behavioral ) with hierarchical regression analysis. The models account for 24. 9% -41. 6% of the variance in the student engagement variables. Additionally， the study examined the difference between online evaluation model of student engagement and online prediction model of learning performance. The significant differences have been found. Finally， the influence of LMS data features on the online evaluation model of student engagement ， the online measurement indicators of student engagement and the influence of curriculum factor on the relationship between students ' engagement and their learning performance are discussed and reflected on.
