顧彬《二十世紀中國文學史》的文學史方法所彰顯的三個最大啟示，是以嚴肅文學為準則，把晚清嚴肅文學與現代性交叉構成的（雅俗）「兩面性」（合理性）極端化為兩難（揚此抑彼）；以國籍作為作品屬性的最終歸宿，並在吸取中外學研成果的基礎上撰述個性化的文學史。跟另外四部同名與標準的文學史對照之下，顧彬執於將「前五四」等同於「前現代」。如此講究寧缺勿濫與精英主義的嚴肅文學，已把「兩面性」之兩難擴展至內容、作者與不同年齡層的讀者，捨棄了其他文化資本，有悖現代（性/新）文學生態。可是勝在作品屬性歸位精當可取，不致於節外生枝；在個性化文學史觀、史論式的自由論述下，它仍是值得借鑒的文學史，與另外三部同名文學史互見長短。

 

Literature history in 20th Century China Literature History written by Kubin, its three greatest revelations of the methods were advocate pure literature as a criterion, particular the polarized dilemma which cross consist of (elegance and vulgarity) "dual characters" (rationality) between pure literature at late Qing dynasty and modernity. Besides, nationality was attributed as the final identity for literature and his works on literature history was completed based on referred to China and foreign literary reviews and personalized view of points. Compare with other four standard works on literature history which were same entitled, the equivalent concept of "pre-May 4th" and "pre-modern" was insisted by Kubin. Under his emphasis on elitism and pure literature, the dilemma of "dual characters" was extended to literary contents, authors and readers from various age groups, resulting the abandon of cultural capital and against the modernity/new literature. However, the final identity for literature was advantage view point that avoided from conceptual entanglements. His works was still to be considered as a valuable literature history, which was full of personalized views on literature history, historical review if compared with other three works on literature history
