There was a heated debate on the practical significance of the Humboldtian Model initiated by the 200th.anniversary of Berlin University. Germany universities, as the representatives of the Humboldtian Model, are now experiencing changes in scale, structure and function. Universities' goals, relation between teaching and research, as well as the position of university research are all facing Challenges and reforms. It is necessary to reflect the practical significance of the Humboldtian Model and future development of research universities from a historical perspective.
