压缩教学周期，增强教学密度--大学英语教学改革新思路

Shorten the teaching cycle and increase its intensity—an innovative suggestion for college English reform

目前大学英语教学存在的主要问题有两个：1）英语学习每周4 课时，分散在两年中，学生难以在漫长、松散的学习过程中，获得成就感，满足感，学习兴趣难以保持，同时由于英语课程沉重的精神负担，很大程度上影响了专业课程的学习；2）对英语基础好、外语语能高的学生提供的培养满足不了他们的需求，致使他们的潜能得不到充分发挥。笔者从国内外高密度、高强度的外语教学成功案例出发，摆脱沿袭多年课程设置的习惯思维，建议加大教学的密度和强度，将两年的英语教学周期压缩为一年，以提高教学效率。

The paper first discusses two major problems in college English teaching followed by an alternative suggestion for current English language teaching reform. The first problem is that the present arrangement of English teaching (i.e. The English course has been taught for two years with only four-hour English lessons per week) lacks intensity so that it is difficult for the students to achieve their expected goals and sustain their interest in learning English. The second problem is that the current English language teaching cannot cater to the needs of the students with high language aptitude and better English language skills so that their potential cannot been brought into full play. The alternative suggestion proposed in this paper is that teaching 10-hour English lessons within one year instead of two years in the current curriculum. As a result， the intensity of English teaching can be enhanced and accordingly， English teaching will be more effective and more efficient. The assumption that intensity is essential for better learning outcomes is made based on the analysis of a series of successful cases where intensity plays a key role.
