Reflection on the Role of Civic Education in Chinese Higher Education

大学生群体是一种特定”社会人”群体，属于精英型的少数人群体，其特定社会角色决定了：这样的社会群体无疑需要承担起其对于社会、对于国家、对于人民以及对于历史的义不容辞的责任，承担起主导社会进歩、引领社会发展的使命；为此，也就需要具备其能够承担这个责任和履行这个使命知识素养、社会素养和道德素养。如何将大学生培养成未来良好社会的实践者、推动者和引领者，无疑就成了高等学校的现实任务和重大课题。

University students comprise a special social group. As a small number of elites， their specific social role has determined that they have to bear their obligatory responsibilities for the society， as well as the country， the people and the history. They must take the missions to direct social progress and lead social development. Therefore， universities must provide with appropriate knowledge， social expertise and morality which enable university students to realize their missions. How to cultivate university students as qualified practitioners， propellers， and leaders in the future society is thus no doubt a realistic task and an important research issue of our country’s higher education.
