Self-learning Is Dying out with the Mother Tongue in Taiwan
This paper clarifies how a child begins to self-learn during breastfeeding and selflearning is developed during the process of acquiring one’s mother tongue, language acquisition. Self-learning facilitates the absorption of one’s culture as well as builds the mind. Through self-learning the mind’s potential is unlimited. In elementary education, it is important that a child is able to learn to read and write his mother tongue or dialect so that his desire to improve himself is not extinguished. Realizing one’s potential is the motivation of self-learning. Self-learning furthers the individual through an active learning process: choosing one’s work, preparing for the work, doing the work, evaluating the work done and then receiving the benefit of doing the work. Mandarin, a mother tongue, is being taught to elementary students like a foreign language causing the self-learning skills which a child has learned before he entered educational institutions to disappear.
