A Study of Faculty Time Allocation for Teaching at Research Universities

An effective investment of time in teaching is regarded as a prerequisite for quality teaching at research universities. However， there has been no reliable basis for how much time should be allocated to teaching at research-oriented universities. Based on data from international and domestic surveys， the study reveals that faculty time allocated to teaching at Chinese research universities is generally equal to the international average， with the data concerning Project 985 Universities slightly lower. It is found that time devoted to teaching preparation is 1.2 to 2.2 times as much as time devoted to classroom teaching. Under the minimum teaching workload requirements， more than 10.5 to 13.5 hours per week should be devoted to teaching by professors and associate professors at Chinese research universities.
