The Development of Educational Foundations and the Establishment of World-Class Universities: A Comparative Analysis

Strong financial support is indispensable for top universities in the world. For Chinese top-class research universities which are striving to attain world-class status， enhancing educational foundations can be an important financing way. The foundation serves as a bridge between universities and society which enhances resource flows. Our empirical research shows significant differences between educational foundations of Chinese top universities and endowment funds of U.S. universities. Specifically， there is a wide disparity in the size of fund between the Chinese top universities and their U.S. counterparts. Besides， the educational foundations of Chinese top universities cannot realize a notable positive feedback mechanism for investment return level on academic reputation， teaching quality and employer reputation as their U.S. counterparts. On this basis， the authors suggest that Chinese top universities could learn from their U.S. counterparts by improving their foundation systems， increasing fund -raising and enhancing investment operation in order to establish world -class educational foundations.
