論米契爾的『道德經』英譯本：「新時代」的產物

Lao Tzu in the Age of Aquarius: On Stephen Mitchell’s Translation of the Tao Te Ching

美國作家史蒂芬‧米契爾（Stephen Mitchell） 的『道德經』英文譯本自從1988 年出版以來，至今已售出一百萬本以上。這本中國古籍，在晚近兩個世紀中的英文 譯本已經超過一百種以上，米契爾的譯本竟然如此暢銷，在出版界至為罕見。本論 文經過分析比較後，認為米契爾的譯本中摻入了甚多「新時代」(New Age)的思想， 以至偏離與扭曲了『道德經』的原意。「新時代」思想是1970 年代後美國文化主流 之一，本論文在綜述其要旨後，推論米契爾的譯本因為迎合時尚，以致廣受歡迎。

This paper examines Stephen Mitchell’s popular translation of the Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu. It attempts to point out some of the inaccuracies of Mitchell’s translation. In addition， it argues that Mitchell’s translation has been deeply influenced by New Age ideas. The paper attempts to describe what some of these New Age ideas are， and by doing so locates Mitchell’s translation within the context of modern culture.
