The Future of World-class Universities

In the United States，historically，the purpose of government in establishing public universities was to increase people’s access to higher education，as well as to direct these universities’educational and research mission towards becoming more practice-and applied-orientated． Hence the significance of the excellent public universities lies not only in its educational opportunities，but more importantly public affordability they provide in a very large scale for people to access to education． Most flagship public universities in general should be valued not just for their academic excellence，but also more access provided exponentially by them to the kind of excellence． Now，if our great public universities are to sustain their mission to serve the public interest， we must have a new way of thinking about partnerships that span not only sectors of our society，but also the national borders，for，increasingly，the most important challenges we face are global ones． If we are to fully take these complex global challenges as our collective responsibility，we must be committed to building new kinds of global partnerships between institutions，either public or private ones，through a variety of methods to improve every university’s future capacity and global influence power．
