大学之「大」涉及到大学是什么、做什么等大学发展的根本问题，涉及到大学教育的本质及其规定性，涉及到大学的定位与特色的形成。在我国的大学发展历程中，先辈对大学之「大」进行了深入的思考，形成了许多独特见解，这对指导当前大学的建设与发展有着重要的启迪、参考价值。当代大学只有从关注大学的有形之大、有限之大，即重视大学的时空之大、大楼之大、规模之大转向关注大学的无形之大、无限之大，即重视大学的胸怀之大、文化之大、精神之大，才能使大学真正肩负起促进中华民族伟大复兴、人类文明社会进步的大任。

The ＂＂greatness＂＂ of university concerns the essential issues of university development about what is university and what does the university do and so on， also concerns the essence and regulation of university education ， and concerns the orientation and forming the Characteristics of university. During the development course after our universities came in to being， our predecessors had pondered the ＂＂greatness＂＂ of university and formed many particular views， which have highly enlightened and given valuable reference to the const ruction and development of universities. Our present universities none but switchfrom paying attention to the bigness of materiality and finity of university， Viz attaching importance to the bigness of space time， multi-storied building and scale to concerning the greatness of bosom， culture and spirit of university， which could really make the university take on the great responsibility of accelerating grandeur renaissance of ournation and promoting the advancement in civilization of human society.
